Pulse repetition frequency is the number of radar pulses transmitted each second. This cadence sets how quickly echoes must be received and interpreted before the next pulse is sent. If a target is farther away than the system can resolve within that time window, echoes from a distant pulse can be mistaken for echoes from a nearer pulse, creating range ambiguity. Because the time between pulses is shorter with a higher PRF, the maximum distance at which range can be unambiguously determined becomes smaller. Conversely, a lower PRF gives a larger unambiguous range, though it reduces update rate and Doppler processing benefits. So PRF primarily indicates the maximum unambiguous range of the enemy system.
